Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions provide centralized control to enforce security policies and manage the corporate data on employees' personal devices effectively. They can remotely wipe corporate data if a device is lost or stolen, enforce encryption, and manage app installation and updates, which is why an MDM solution is the best approach for a BYOD policy.

While requiring a VPN for remote access is a good security practice, it does not directly secure corporate data on the personal devices themselves. Antivirus software is essential for protecting against malware but does not provide comprehensive data management. Encrypted containers could protect data, but on their own, they do not offer as broad a set of management and security controls as MDM solutions do.
