Escalation is necessary because resolving the issue requires decisions or resources beyond the project manager's authority. This action ensures that senior management is aware of the significant potential deviation from the plan and can provide strategic direction, reallocate resources, approve changes to scope or schedule, or authorize use of management reserves. While discussing solutions with the team is a valuable activity, it should happen in parallel with or after the escalation, as the team cannot authorize a schedule extension or additional resources. Waiting or seeking informal advice are not appropriate actions for a significant issue that threatens project objectives.
