The most important outcome of conducting a lessons learned session at the end of a phase is to update the lessons learned register. This document captures valuable knowledge that can be applied to improve the execution of subsequent phases of the current project and can also be archived as an organizational process asset for future projects. While gaining stakeholder approval and releasing team members are also part of phase closure, the primary goal of the described session is knowledge capture for continuous improvement. Creating a new risk register is part of planning, not a direct outcome of a lessons learned session, although insights from the session may lead to identifying new risks.
