An active-passive setup consists of a primary, active system and a secondary, passive (standby) system. The standby system is not actively handling traffic or data until the primary system fails, at which point it takes over to ensure continued service availability. This contrasts with an active-active setup where both systems are handling traffic concurrently, or other strategies like cold, warm, and hot sites which refer to the readiness and equipment levels of backup sites.
