A Layer 3 capable switch, also known as a multilayer switch, operates at both the Data Link Layer (Layer 2) of the OSI model by forwarding data based on MAC address, as well as the Network Layer (Layer 3) by using IP addresses to route traffic between VLANs. This is unlike a traditional Layer 2 switch which can only perform switching and not routing.
