Stateless address autoconfiguration (SLAAC) is a feature within the IPv6 protocol that enables a device to automatically configure its own IPv6 address based on the router's advertisement, without the use of a DHCPv6 server. This method utilizes the network prefix provided by the local router and combines it with an interface identifier to create a full IPv6 address.

Router advertisement only indicates the presence of a router and provides certain network parameters, but does not facilitate the actual address configuration. DHCPv6 is a stateful address configuration protocol and, while it also enables automatic IPv6 address configuration, it requires a DHCPv6 server, which is not necessary for SLAAC. Link-local addresses are used for communication on a single local network segment and are not configured through SLAAC.
