A stratum 1 server directly connects to an authoritative timekeeping device, such as an atomic clock, which provides the highest precision for time synchronization in network environments. The accuracy of the time decreases with each additional stratum level, as they receive their time from an upper-tier server. Hence, stratum 2 and 3 servers, which get their time from stratum 1 and 2 servers respectively, would offer reduced precision compared to a stratum 1 server. An ordinary client, typically located at the bottom of the hierarchy, would not be suitable for synchronizing the time for other devices as it usually does not distribute time.
