A Layer 3 capable switch, often called a multilayer switch, can perform both switching functions at Layer 2 using MAC addresses and routing functions at Layer 3 using IP addresses. It combines elements of both switches and routers, making it possible to facilitate the movement of data within a LAN as well as across different subnets.
