Therefore, they should urinate and discard the first morning specimen, noting the time as the start of the 24-hour period. All subsequent urine passed over the next 24 hours must be collected. The collection is completed by having the patient urinate one last time at the 24-hour mark the next morning and adding that specimen to the container. Starting the collection with the first void would incorrectly include urine produced before the 24-hour test period began. Collecting only for a single calendar day or taking partial samples would not yield a valid 24-hour specimen and would lead to inaccurate test results.
