In a parallel test (sometimes called a functional test), the recovery environment is brought online in parallel with the primary production systems. Live or copied production data is processed simultaneously at both sites, and the results are compared to verify that the alternate site can assume the workload. Because production remains active, normal business operations are not interrupted.

A full-interruption test stops production entirely and fails users over, which management specifically wanted to avoid. A tabletop (or structured walkthrough) is only a discussion-based review with no system activation. A pilot-light approach verifies core services start but does not run full workloads for side-by-side output comparison. Therefore, the parallel test is the only option that satisfies running applications concurrently at both sites without disrupting customers.
