The processor, or CPU, is responsible for executing instructions and performing calculations. It takes input data, processes it according to the instructions given by a program, and then produces output. The processor does not store data for long-term access; that is the role of storage devices. Likewise, it is not used to enter data into the system or display processed data, which are the roles of input devices and output devices, respectively.
