Encryption protects the confidentiality of data by ensuring that if it falls into the wrong hands, it cannot be read without the appropriate decryption key. Compression reduces the size of files, optimizing storage space; however, it alone does not protect the content's confidentiality. Combining both encryption and compression addresses both requirements of optimizing storage space and maintaining the confidentiality of the data.
