Azure SQL Managed Instance delivers a fully managed platform as a service experience while maintaining nearly 100 percent compatibility with the latest on-premises SQL Server engine. Because it is PaaS, Microsoft performs operating-system and database patching, backups, and routine maintenance. Managed Instance also exposes SQL Server Agent, enabling scheduled jobs in the same way as an on-premises deployment. Azure SQL Database is also managed, but it does not include SQL Agent and lacks certain engine features.
