Unstructured data is information that has no predefined data model or fixed schema. Files such as documents, images, and audio clips are stored as opaque binary or text blobs whose internal structure is not known to the storage system. The data must be interpreted only when it is read. In contrast, structured data is organized in rows and columns with enforced data types and relationships, and semi-structured data (such as JSON or XML) contains self-describing tags or key-value pairs. Referential integrity constraints are also features of structured, relational data, not unstructured files.
