AWS is responsible for protecting the infrastructure that runs all of the services offered in the AWS Cloud. The responsibility for patching the guest operating system, however, falls to the customer. Since the guest operating system and network configuration are managed by the customer, AWS would not be responsible for their maintenance. Infrastructure maintenance, such as physical security, environmental controls, and the physical hardware within the data center is under AWS's purview.
