Lightning is a proprietary connector developed by Apple and is not directly compatible with USB-C ports. To connect a device with a Lightning connector to a USB-C port, an adapter or a special cable with different connectors on each end is needed. This sort of interconnectivity requires some form of physical conversion because the connectors have different shapes, pinouts, and protocols.
