Network edge locations-also called edge points of presence (PoPs)-extend Google's network beyond its core regions and zones to hundreds of sites located close to end users. When a request enters Google's network at an edge location, it travels over Google's private backbone to the nearest region that serves the content, greatly reducing round-trip time. Regions and zones improve availability within larger geographic areas, but they are still farther from many users than edge PoPs. Subsea fiber cables provide intercontinental connectivity, not local request processing. Therefore, network edge locations are the infrastructure element purpose-built to lower user-perceived latency.
