Your team runs a zonal standard GKE cluster in us-central1-a. During a zone outage the entire application went offline because the control plane became unreachable. You must redesign the cluster to keep the control plane available if any single zone fails, while continuing to self-manage node pools and minimizing operational changes. What should you do?
Convert the existing cluster to Autopilot so Google manages a multi-zonal control plane automatically.
Create a regional Standard GKE cluster in us-central1 and add a node pool that spans three zones.
Deploy three separate zonal clusters (one per zone) and expose them with multi-cluster Ingress behind a Cloud Load Balancer.
Keep the current zonal cluster and enable surge upgrades; this will reschedule nodes quickly even if a zone fails.
Only a regional GKE cluster automatically replicates the control plane across multiple zones in the same region, allowing the API server and etcd datastore to remain available if one zone becomes unavailable. Creating a regional Standard cluster preserves your ability to size and manage node pools yourself while adding high-availability control-plane replicas. The existing zonal cluster cannot be converted in place to Autopilot, and Autopilot would hand over node management to Google, contradicting the requirement to keep self-managed node pools. Enabling surge upgrades or adding extra node pools does not protect the single-zone control plane from an outage. Running three separate zonal clusters with multi-cluster Ingress adds complexity and cost and still leaves each cluster's control plane vulnerable to its zone's failure.
