Your project stores 30 daily snapshots of a 2-TB persistent disk. To reduce costs, you plan to delete the first seven snapshots that were taken a month ago. A teammate is concerned that because Compute Engine snapshots are incremental, removing the earliest snapshots will corrupt or make later snapshots unusable. What will actually happen when you delete the oldest snapshots?
Google Cloud automatically turns the next snapshot into a full snapshot before allowing the deletion, so storage usage stays the same.
Only the data blocks that are no longer referenced are removed; later snapshots stay fully restorable.
All later snapshots become unusable because the incremental chain is broken.
Deletion is blocked until you either delete the entire snapshot chain or create a new full snapshot of the disk.
Compute Engine snapshots are block-level and incremental. When a snapshot is deleted, only the blocks that are no longer referenced by any remaining snapshot are removed from Cloud Storage. Any blocks that are still referenced by later snapshots are retained automatically, so newer snapshots remain intact and fully restorable. Therefore, deleting earlier snapshots simply frees the unique blocks they alone referenced and lowers storage costs; it does not invalidate the rest of the snapshot chain. The platform does not require you to create a new full snapshot first, nor does it block the deletion.
